报告题目:From atoms to large structures, materials design for extreme conditions

报告简介:

This presentation aims to illustrate the major research interests of Professor Pedro Rivera and his team. Methodologies for the design, characterisation and testing of alloys across the scales are presented. Bearing steels, aerospace alloys, nuclear reactor materials, and automotive structural materials are exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. Massive contact pressures exceeding 5 GPa, temperatures above 900°C, heavy neutron irradiation, and high strain rates are some of such conditions. This presentation shows how thermodynamics, plasticity, and phase kinetics modelling can be combined with dedicated experimental techniques to design novel materials. This is matched by characterisation from the atom to the engineering scale. The pairing of modelling and characterisation can be adopted for the conception of new sustainable alloys.

The presentation will also include a description of the unique facilities present at University of Southampton, and potential collaboration programmes.

报告人简介:

Professor Pedro Rivera Diaz Del Castillo is a Professor in Structural materials and GMP / Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair (RAERC) in ‘Alloy and microstructure design for additive layer manufacturing (ALM)’at Southampton University, where he is also Professor in Structural Materials and Director of Research. Before this, he was Professor in Lancaster University, School of Engineering, and formerly Assistant Director of Research (Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, University of Cambridge). Before 2009, he was tenured Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, Faculty of Aerospace Engineering. In 2013, he obtained the Vanadium Award from the Institute of Materials for his work on ally design. He has been a Nationally Recognized Researcher (SNI II) by the National Council of Science and Technology of Mexico (2012, 2016). He has received funding of £7M from recent grants, including: 1) RAERC in Alloy and Microstructure Design for ALM £1m, PI; 2) Advanced and novel microstructures for wire technology Bekaert £466k, PI; 3) Computer-aided design of revolutionary superalloys EC Horizon 2020, £86k, PI; 4) Increasing bearing life by combining a novel manufacturing bearing steel process with multiscale modelling techniques EPSRC £419k, Cambridge, PI. The majority of his funding has been directly awarded from industry. He has published over 185 articles in top scientific journals in the field of alloy design, including Acta Materialia and Materials and Design.
