摘要:
The recent advances in correcting the aberrations of electron microscope lenses have made it possible to routinely examine atomic scale structures of not only model systems but also practical materials/systems that are relevant to materials research. Static and dynamical observations of nanostructures, under gas environment and at elevated temperatures, provide valuable information on how the atomic scale structures respond to external stimuli. The insights gained through integrated electron microscopy characterizations not only help optimizing materials synthesis protocols but also provide, at least in some cases, the fundamental understanding of synthesis-structure-performance relationships. I will discuss the use of aberration-corrected electron microscopy (ACEM) techniques to characterize supported metal nanoparticles, clusters and isolated single atoms and, in combination with catalytic performance evaluations and DFT calculations, to probe the catalytically active centers of such supported metal systems. Examples of shape-controlled nanostructures (cubes, cages, frames, etc.), metal-support interactions, atom-size chains, single-atom catalysts and doped 2D nano-sheets will be discussed. The impact of ACEM techniques on a broad spectrum of research frontiers is blossoming.

个人简历(简介):
Dr. Jingyue (Jimmy) Liu is now a Professor in the Department of Physics at Arizona State University (ASU). He obtained his Ph.D. degree in condensed matter physics at ASU and then was funded by Shell for 4 years to develop EM techniques for catalyst characterization before he joined Monsanto Company as a group leader (1994). He was promoted to Corporate Fellow and then Senior Fellow for sustained outstanding contributions to Monsanto's businesses. Dr. Liu was recruited to UM-St. Louis (2006) as Professor of Physics and Chemistry and Director of the Center for Nanoscience. He was then recruited back to ASU (2011) as Professor of Physics and serves as Director of the Professional Science Master’s in Nanoscience Program as well as Committee Chair of the John M. Cowley Center for HREM at ASU. Dr. Liu received the prestigious 2001 Edgar M. Queeny Award for Science and Technology, the highest award within Monsanto for scientific achievement and business impact. He is a Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America and has published over 300 journal and conference articles. https://physics.asu.edu/content/jingyue-liu
